Food Truck Update: 107 Volunteers, 127 Households Served

Around 9:00 AM on Wednesday, July 22, a semi full of groceries from the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan rumbled into the Assumption parking lot, signaling the start of our parish’s annual food distribution day in partnership with the Midland County Food Assistance Network. The truck backed up to the doors of the parish hall, where it was met by a group of 107 volunteers, including children, teens, and adults—some setting the day aside to volunteer as a family.

By 11:30 AM, this incredible crew of helping hands had unloaded, organized, and distributed the 9,005 pounds of groceries right into the cars of 127 households, impacting a total of 288 people in need. As one volunteer put it, the distribution left him feeling “tired but inspired” and filled with gratitude to be part of this day of service.

The funding for the food truck was donated by parishioners as a form of Lenten almsgiving earlier this year. Any donations leftover from the collection after expenses are paid will be donated to local charities assisting those facing food insecurity. As an extra gift, the parish also collected enough hygiene items to give a package of toiletries to each household who came for assistance with food.

“Wow, what a wonderful day!” wrote Ann and Joe Schoren, parishioners of Assumption and volunteer coordinators of the food truck, in a heartfelt note of gratitude to the parish following the distribution. “Thank you, many times over to all for helping to feed the hungry.”
